While we all have a spare, what we do with it is crucial. Many people keep their spare key hidden inside their automobile, which seems odd to me. It appears to be dangerous to hide your key on the outside of your car, but doing so might deter thieves.

We've all seen movies with a spare key hidden inside the gas door or somewhere above a tire. Sure, having those keys on hand would be really convenient if you were locked out of your car, but what happens if it is stolen?

If you're going to put your key outside of your vehicle somewhere, make sure it's a good hiding spot. We're going all out with FBI-level stealth and the potential hazards of leaving your key on the exterior of your car.

The greatest solution, however, would be to conceal your key at your job or at home where someone may obtain it for you. If you're locked out at home, great; you can always get hold of the key. If you store the key in your garage and don't have access, make sure you can get into it.

Examine the Safety of Your Environment

It's never a good idea to spend lengthy periods of time on the roadside, especially if it's on the highway. People are blasé and drive outside of the lines, putting you at risk just by being on a busy road.

When there's any potential for harm, you must get away from your car as quickly as possible and leave the area. If you're on the side of the road, generally speaking, you should call for assistance right away.

Parking lots and driveways are safe, but busy roads and streets are not.
